517 MILLION TO 1 BILLION
The number of people in the world who need vision correction but can’t afford it.
Although most cases of Uncorrected Refractive Error (URE) are treatable with eyeglasses, access to eyeglasses and proper diagnosis is severely limited in developing countries. Too often, well-meaning outsiders attempt to address these needs in the developing world by providing professionals, equipment, and products from outside the area. Whilethese solutions are short- term and rely on foreigners providing goods and services, ProSEC’s approach is to empower local entrepreneurs to create profitable social businesses that prescribe, manufacture, and distribute eyeglasses using local talent and materials, retaining local control, and thereby directly contributing to local economic development.
