The goal of the Project for Sustainable Eye Care at Bucknell University is to provide effective eye care to the developing world using both environmentally and economically sustainable methods. A joint venture between the Schools of Management and Engineering, the strategy of PROSEC is to empower local entrepreneurs by supplying them with the knowledge and tools to create social businesses that prescribe, manufacture, and distribute eyeglasses. Our engineering team has worked on developing affordable technologies to make this goal possible, while our management team has performed market research and explored the many methods of implementing our goal in order to make our work as effective as possible. The project is designed to employ local talents and materials as well as to allow entrepreneurs to control all business operations, directly contributing to local economic development. By providing affordable eye care through this social enterprise, we will also improve local conditions through the residents enhanced well-being and functionality.
